What are dentures?

A complete denture is an artificial replacement for natural teeth. They rest against your gum tissue and act as an alternative to teeth. In most cases, patients need multiple tooth extractions prior to having dentures. Depending on Dr. Hale’s proposed treatment plan for your unique situation, you may need extractions which can be done in our office or by one of our trusted oral surgery centers in Fort Wayne.

Our new digital dentures are made over just a few appointments with the dentist. Dr. Hale will take an impression of your mouth, and work with a local dental laboratory to get the perfect fit.

A lot goes into it, such as determining height, size, space, bite, and artfully developing the perfect look for your unique mouth. A custom denture can be an affordable option for someone needing a complete smile makeover without the means for dental implants or implant-supported dentures. If you only need a few teeth replaced, a partial denture may be the option for you.

Benefits of Full Arch Dentures

Unlimited Denture Adjustments

Fit is very important with any denture. In the initial first weeks of having your denture, you will likely need a few adjustments with Dr. Jonathan Hale. With our traditional dentures, there is no limit to the number of adjustments we make, so if at any time something doesn’t feel right, give our office a call. It will be a short appointment and will make a huge difference in the way you feel.

Over the life of your denture, normal wear may require your denture to need more adjusting. We will never charge for a denture adjustment given you maintain regular annual appointments with our office.

You may need a denture adjustment if you experience the following:

  • Discomfort eating
  • Dentures falling out of your mouth
  • The feeling of gagging
  • Sore spots

Dentist Approved Care Routine

Ensure longevity and maintain the look and feel of your natural teeth by taking these steps to care for your new teeth.

  1. Brush your dentures twice a day. Just like your real teeth, your dentures need to be brushed with a soft bristle brush every day.
  2. The best kind of cleaner is going to be white vinegar or a specific denture cleaning solution. These products are not harsh and will help remove the extra grime from all-day wear.
  3. Never use a hard toothbrush or hot water. This will scratch and distort the plastic.

Maintaining false teeth will help ensure optimal comfort and wearability. If you wear dentures, it’s very important to clean them regularly.

At your next appointment, be sure to ask the dentist which solution is good for your dentures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Age is not a factor; people can get dentures at any age. However, it is more common for elders or senior citizens to need dentures because they have had their teeth longer.

If you regularly care for your oral health and do not have gum disease, it’s unlikely to need dentures. For patients with gum disease the risk increases due. It is possible to have never had a cavity in your entire life, but still develop gum disease which could result in a need for dentures or alternative treatments.

There is no better alternative to full dentures than your natural teeth. If tooth replacement is necessary, a dental implant is the most functional replacement option. A bridge would be the second-best tooth replacement option when determining quality of life and functionality.

Affordability. Support. Removability. Dentures are the most affordable option for full-mouth tooth replacement. Dentures and partial dentures support your jaw structure, help you chew, and speak clearly. Unlike bridges or implants, dentures are removeable which can be beneficial to some people.

Lack of support. Lifestyle changes. Seeking adjustments.
You do not get the same amount of chewing support in a partial or full denture as you would with your natural teeth or even a bridge or a dental implant.

When you choose to get dentures, you are choosing to live your life differently than pre-dentures. There is a learning curve to overcome when familiarizing yourself with your new dentures. A complete denture like having a big block of plastic in your mouth. Oftentimes, it takes a while to get used to.

Partial and complete dentures can be viable replacements for your teeth depending on your budget and needs. Nothing beats your natural teeth, but sometimes replacing them is necessary. Talk to your dentist or call our office to learn more about how we make and fit dentures.
